Quebec choreographer Noémie Lafrance, now ensconced
in New York, will be in Montreal to present Melt, a feast of
textures and sensuality. Admission is free to the Esplanade at
Place des Arts to see this installation/dance piece performed high
overhead.
Fasted to an exterior wall, the five performers, their bodies
covered in beeswax and lanolin, unfold their dripping wet limbs in
a desperate attempt to escape harsh immobility as they literally
melt under the heat of the lights and the sun. Renowned for her
dance performances in highly unusual sites such as a dilapidated
swimming pool, a spectacular staircase or an indoor parking garage,
the choreographer brings out the expressive colours of a given
space, never dissociating the dance from the site itself or from
the audience watching it. By transforming urban spaces into a
playground, Noémie Lafrance goes straight to where we live,
opening our eyes wide with wonder. (I.P.)
Due to weather conditions, lighting design of the show has been
modified.
