Mathilda, a young Brazilian and expert jokester, becomes resigned, as she waits to build a career as a comedian, to earn her living as a housekeeper for the brilliant doctors Lane and Charles, a totally offbeat couple. Lane’s sister, who is crazy about housekeeping, replaces Mathilda in her functions to enable her to find the perfect joke. The situation becomes complicated when Charles finds a kindred soul, a female cancer patient he has just operated on. Everyone Mathilda comes across, despite herself, find meaning in their lives, in love and in death. This amusing, biting and unusual domestic drama was written by Sarah Ruhl, a promising new voice in American dramatic art.
