Danse Danse 2008-2009 Season
Kylián le grand (Quebec / Slovakia)
Choreographers : Jiří Kylián and other choreographers in link with NDT
November 13, 14, 15, 2008
Théâtre Maisonneuve, Place des Arts
Anik Bissonnette and Mario Radacovsky, the director of Ballet at the Slovak National Theatre (BSNT) and former dancer of the Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT), are the chief architects of this splendid tribute to Jiří Kylián. A show-stopper at the 2006 Festival des Arts in Saint-Sauveur, the show is reborn here in a new version. A selection of solos, duets, trios and ensemble pieces will be performed by dancers of the highest rank: Anik Bissonnette and Mario Radacovsky, along with the dancers of BSNT and NDT. Punctuated by excerpts from an interview with the master filmed in the Netherlands, Kylián le grand is an encounter with a legendary artist. Unmissable.
“Although each of my ballets alludes to sexuality and, to some extent, death, they are more concerned with the efforts of human beings to defend freedom in a violent world.” —Jiří Kylián. Born in Prague in 1947, Jiří Kylián is among the most brilliant choreographers of his generation. As artistic director of the NDT from 1975 to 1999, Kylián built bridges between styles, ages and traditions. Through an impressive corpus of ballets—over 90, including 72 for the NDT—Kylián has continually sought “the truth.” His favourite themes include the couple, war, his homeland, and Japanese and native cultures. His choreographies are represented in the repertoires of over eighty dance companies.
