Juliette Binoche, the world-renowned actress who won an Oscar for The English Patient, will be in Montreal for the most anticipated show of the season. The star of Blue (Kieslowski), The Unbearable Lightness of Being (Kaufman) and Chocolate (Hallström) returns to her first love, theatre, alongside British choreographer Akram Khan in a work that also features the celebrated visual artist and sculptor Anish Kapoor. The world premiere will be held at the National Theatre in London in September 2008, followed by performances in the world’s major cultural centres. In the spring of 2006, Danse Danse audiences were mesmerized by Akram Khan’s unique style. “The piece [ma] is delightful […] The dance, music, song, story, and syllabic and rhythmic chants of Indian art are organically integrated into a very contemporary production” (Le Devoir). An absolute must! Only dates in Canada.
Born in London in 1974, Akram Khan began his career at the age of 14 in Peter Brook’s legendary Mahabharata. After an initial training in kathak dance, he studied at P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels, the mecca of contemporary dance instruction in Europe. His signature style, a mix of media and traditions, fires the imagination and captures the spirit of the era. Refusing all labels, Khan has collaborated with numerous artists, including composer Steve Reich, sculptor Antony Gormley, ballerina Sylvie Guillem, dancer-choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and singer Kylie Minogue.
