“The control of the movement is so fine it can resemble a mirage. […] an overwhelming sensory experience for the viewer.” (The New York Times)
Dense and hypnotic, with an austere, astounding beauty, the works of Ushio Amagatsu are admired the world over. For more than thirty years, his company Sankai Juku has conveyed his very personal vision of butoh and has become Japan’s most renowned dance troupe. After presenting Kagemi at Danse Danse in 2006, the acclaimed company is back with Hibiki (Resonance from Far Away), a splendid piece that received the Laurence Olivier award for best new dance production in London. Dressed in long robes, with shaved heads and bodies smeared with white powder, the dancers are mediums transmitting a faraway resonance, creating a dialogue of consciousness. “Snake-like figures speak of sexuality and androgyny, with portrayals of sadism and gentleness and visions of the fœtus, of birth and death. Entrancing and incredibly magnetic.” (Midi Libre, Montpellier)
