Maria de Medeiros, woman of the world, and of worldwide cinema (Pulp Fiction, Henry & June, Le polygraphe…) is part of a generation of Portuguese artists not simply raised on Brazilian music, but literally formed by the music of such masters as Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento and Gilberto Gil. Her free-spirited and expressive appropriation of this magnificent repertoire brings a uniquely moving quality to her work. With its melancholy shadings, Medeiros’ album A Little More Blue finds itself just outside the usual multicoloured, festive Brazilian repertoire. It is this very quality which gives her music such a distinct personality— one present in her forthcoming album Péninsules & Continents, which she’ll perform for us in concert.
