ANTON KUERTI & "THE EMPEROR" / OSM
RAFAEL FRUHBECK DE BURGOS, conductor
ANTON KUERTI, piano
BEETHOVEN
Piano Concerto No. 5 ("Emperor")
DEBUSSY
La Mer
STRAVINSKI
Firebird suite (1919)
“The word ‘concerto’ is used here in its original sense of a musical contest carried to extremes,” was the admirable judgment of Harry Halbreich in reference to Beethoven’s Fifth Concerto. Beginning with the first movement, the listener is landed in a world where the style is dazzling ands explosive, the spirit heroic and the melodies enthralling. It will be performed here by Anton Kuerti, one of the most acclaimed Beethoven performers on the international scene. “Beethoven by Anton Kuerti is always a remarkable thing,” as the Ottawa Citizen pointed out.
Former OSM music director Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos also revisits the Orchestra in two of the most celebrated orchestral pages of the early twentieth century, La Mer, a true symphony by Debussy, and a suite from The Firebird, a ballet that helped launch the career of Stravinsky.
