July 10, 2010 - A new name for the Lanaudière Amphitheatre: Fernand-Lindsay Amphitheatre

Fernand Lindsay Joliette , July 10, 2010 – The Lanaudière Amphitheatre is now called the Fernand-Lindsay Amphitheatre in tribute to this exceptional supporter of musical life. The Minister of Culture, Communications and the Status of Women, Christine St-Pierre, made the announcement today, following a resolution to that effect by Place des Arts’ board of directors. Place des Arts has managed and owned the amphitheatre since 1995.

Renowned for its acoustic qualities, and located in an enchanting setting, the Lanaudière Amphitheatre would surely not have been built in 1989 without the determination of Fernand Lindsay whose wish was to host great orchestras and the finest soloists in an outdoor amphitheatre comparable to those he had seen in Europe. A passionate man whose lifelong mission was to share an appreciation of music, Fernand Lindsay left a profound mark on Québec’s musical life.

“Place des Arts is pleased to see Fernand Lindsay’s name perpetuated in such a fitting way. For over 20 years now, the amphitheatre has been brought to life with classical music, Father Lindsay’s great passion. Associating his name to the musical mecca he helped create is both an appropriate gesture and a duty of remembrance,” stated Marie Lavigne, President and CEO of the Société de la Place des Arts de Montréal.

As the 33rd Festival de Lanaudière opens today, Place des Arts is proud to be the event’s partner. As manager and owner of the site, Place des Arts annually invests the financial and human resources necessary to make it a venue that meets the highest standards of concert presentation. Place des Arts has also partnered with the Festival de Lanaudière for the screening of a series of films on music, presented free of charge every Tuesday evening during the Festival.

The grant that the Minister of Culture, Communications and the Status of Women is providing to the Festival today will allow for the addition of giant screens, thereby furthering the programming’s reach, and bringing musicians and spectators closer together.

The amphitheatre now has new signage in which the Amphithéâtre Fernand-Lindsay name is a dominant element. The graphics are a modern representation of ancient theatres, with two filigree arches capped by masks, which in the past were applied to keystones. The masks also make reference to the performing arts and to the amphitheatre’s multi-disciplinary nature. The signage was designed by graphic artist François Dallaire.
