Montreal, September 15, 2008
– Place des Arts is proud to launch a brand-new
program for young people: PDA junior. Its main objective
is to bring together, under one roof, all the youth-oriented
productions of Place des Arts and its resident companies, and to
add new works aimed at the youngest audiences. By offering multiple
activities from a wide range of disciplines, Place des Arts hopes
to become a favourite destination for family outings throughout the
season. During the Holiday Season, school break, and almost every
weekend, the 30-odd events lined up at Place des Arts will be
swarming with enthusiastic and enchanted young audiences.
Fall-winter 2008
The dance company Cas public will offer a workshop based on
Cabaret dansé du vilain petit canard, in which
spectators will discover the stages and imaginative efforts
involved in mounting a dance production. Aladin et le luth
magique, created by the Festival du Monde Arabe de
Montréal, will plunge viewers into the mysterious and
spellbinding world of Arab culture.
With its Adventure at Sea, the Montreal Symphony
Orchestra (Children’s Corner) offers a musical voyage aboard
an imaginary ocean liner, among fabulous sea creatures. Les Petites
Tounes, one of the most popular children’s groups in Quebec,
will present the amazing Dans le sous-sol to the sounds of
their scintillating music. Les Jeunesses Musicales du Canada will
present three shows combining animation, narration and music:
Anabelle Canto; Mission sur la planète
Alliage; and Mon accordéon à moi
(Sons et Brioches).
Ti-Jean chez les revenants, a puppet show created by
the Théâtre de Deux Mains, depicts the maiden
adventures of a young hero who is determined to conquer his fears.
Last but not least, Place des Arts will welcome the Festival Les
Coups de Théâtre, which will feature both
international and local companies.
Holiday
Festivities
Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal will once again
perform the classic ballet, The Nutcracker. In an
event created specially for the PDA Junior program, a
reading of the magical tale will take place in La magie du
temps des Fêtes avec Casse-Noisette. Les Jeunesses
Musicales du Canada will present Grand Bal de Noël,
in which three penguin musicians must compose a song in order to
take part in the holiday celebrations. Will they be able to do
it?
Décembre, a production of Québec Issime,
will bring together various Christmas characters in spectacular
sets, who will perform some of the great holiday classics.
Combining music, circus arts and new technology in a dazzling
environment, L’arche, by L’Arsenal à
musique, is a reflection on the relationship between humanity and
nature.
Winter – Spring 2009
With its giant puppets, the Théâtre Sans Fil will
present its version of Hansel and Gretel, whose heroes try
to thwart the diabolical schemes of the wicked witch Grignote. The
Jeunesses Musicales du Canada, with Le Musicien des
glaces, Les 7 trompettes de Fred Piston,
Skarazula and Rythmo-Synchro, blend music and
animation in a voyage into space and time (Sons et
Brioches).
Presented by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra (Children’s
Corner), Nuit blanche, une histoire à dormir debout
and La Porte mystérieuse, et si on
l’ouvrait ?... will allow young people to discover some
of the great musical works. La Croisée des mots, an
interactive piece produced by the Théâtre des Deux
Mondes, will invite children to foil the evil designs of a wicked,
story-eating ogre.
With Alea Canto, presented by the Atelier lyrique de
l’Opéra de Montréal, music in all its forms,
from jazz to popular music, will be performed with humour and high
spirits by opera singers. Renée Robitaille’s Gros
Biscuit will feature tales inspired by the world of Robert
Munsch. In Benoît, Benoît Archambault and his
Tiguidous friends will sing a variety of original songs. In
Étoile, cacahuète et ritournelles,
actress-singers Isabelle Lemme and Évelyne Gélinas
will enact nursery rhymes that have soothed and delighted
generations of children.
The Compagnie Jean Duceppe will present a special activity for
adolescents 12 and over. Actor Benoît McGinnis will answer
questions from the host and audience on his artistic approach, and
will perform an excerpt from the play Amadeus, in which he
plays the role of Mozart.
Stories, songs, dance, music and theatre, performed with humour
and imagination for children aged 3 to 12—this is what
PDA junior has to offer! Hurry to get the schedule of
activities, some of which are free of charge. Treasures are within
your reach!
