An
Odyssey to the Heart of Artistic Creation
Montreal, 18 August 2008 – This
year, the theatre company Les Deux Mondes is
celebrating its 35th anniversary and thirty years on the road.
The Série
Cinquième Salle is hosting its latest
production, born of these tours to the four corners of the Earth,
CARNETS DE VOYAGES (Carnets de
voyages). This work will be performed on
September 4, 5, 11, 12 and 13 in the Cinquième
Salle of Place des Arts. More than ever, Les Deux
Mondes takes us elsewhere: to the heart of artistic creation. These
CARNETS DE VOYAGES the fruit of the imagination of its
four collaborators – Michel Robidoux (music
and sound), Yves Dubé (visual design),
Normand Canac-Marquis (text) and Daniel
Meilleur (director) – star
Jean-François Casabonne and
Véronique Marchand.
Once, like you,
I packed my bags for my first foreign tour.
The next day, 35
years had passed.
Two actors hit the road for an imaginary
tour, the tour of tours told through travel diaries they’ve
accumulated over the years. From China to Africa and Europe to
Montreal, they talk of life and death, theatre, and the ups and
downs of their love lives. The older of the two,
Jean-François, has 35 years’ experience in his body
and soul. Véronique, many years younger, is on her first
tour, and the events she experiences will call her conception of
the world into question.
CARNETS DE VOYAGES traces the
stages leading from self awareness to an awareness of others and
emphasises the need for imagination in order to change reality.
There is life after life: the life of others! Through the pages of
these CARNETS DE VOYAGES, we discover the importance of being open
to other people’s ideas, of exploring the unknown, passing on
knowledge, respecting your audience and the special bonds of
friendship which tie travelling players.
I have arrived at the furthest point in my
journey, which is neither the summit nor the end of the road, but
the point where I look all around me, where I look at
you.
Since it was founded in 1973, Les Deux
Mondes has travelled the globe, keeping its eyes wide open and its
ears to the ground. The company has created 26 original works and
given more than 3,300 performances on all five continents. It has
won numerous awards and its original works and artistic enquiry
have led it to more than 200 cities in 32 countries. At the
beginning of CARNETS DE VOYAGES we thus find some of the
images, stories, music and sounds gathered in the course of these
peregrinations, mixed with the private lives of the performers and
the imaginary worlds of its creators. Through the magic of
multimedia, video and 3D animation, all of these elements recreate
places and ambiences and set the tone for this poetic and moving
work of musical theatre.
