Les Années de
pèlerinage
Montréal, May 13 2008 – Place des
Arts and the Fondation Jean-Pierre Perreault have concluded a
partnership agreement to conserve and display much of the pictorial
oeuvre of the late Jean-Pierre Perreault. Twelve sets designed by
the famed choreographer and scenographer will be on permanent
display at Théâtre Maisonneuve. Six works from
Eironos will hang in the theatre lobby and six other
designs from Les Années de pèlerinage will
be displayed in the mezzanine.
In addition to these loaned works, 37 other set designs will be
stored at Place des Arts. Mr. Perreault originally planned to
become a visual artist, and often created his choreographies
through drawings.
For the Perreault foundation, the agreement is aimed at
conserving, displaying and promoting the legacy of its founder. For
Place des Arts, it is another opportunity to make a variety of art
forms available to a wide audience (some 200,000 spectators attend
over 200 performances at Théâtre Maisonneuve each
year).
A dance venue par excellence, Théâtre Maisonneuve
hosts performances by some of the most prestigious dance companies
from home and abroad. Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal and
Danse Danse regularly grace its stage.
Dance inhabits many spaces at Théâtre Maisonneuve.
On arriving, spectators are greeted by the impressive tapestry by
Louise Lemieux-Bérubé, titled Le Dernier
Déjeuner sur l'herbe and inspired by Fernand Nault's
La Cérémonie. The main character is a
likeness of Vincent Warren, who was a dancer with Les Grands
Ballets Canadiens at the time. In the Foyer Jean-Gascon stands a
magnificent bronze statue by sculptor Elizabeth MacQueen of dancer
Jorge Donn, immortalized in a spectacular grand jeté.
Place des Arts President and CEO Marie Lavigne says: "This
agreement with the Fondation Jean-Pierre Perreault is perfectly in
line with Place des Arts' core mission of promoting Québec
arts and culture. When the foundation broached the idea with us, we
saw it as an opportunity to let the public discover the wealth of
Jean-Pierre Perreault's oeuvre. As the main presenter of dance in
Québec, Place des Arts greatly values this legacy."
