Final series of the 5th season: April
3, 10 and 17
Montreal, March 20, 2008
– For the final series in the 5th season of
LES MÉLODÎNES, Pro
Musica and Place des Arts are offering
three invigorating spring concerts on Thursdays from 12:10 to 12:50
p.m. On April 3, the Ensemble Çavana will
plunge us into the rollicking rhythms of Venezuela with the help of
the cuatro, an amazingly versatile four-stringed guitar, along with
piano, flute, bass, guitar and clarinet. On April 10, pianist
Maneli Pirzadeh, one of the most popular
performers on the circuit, will demonstrate the entire range of his
talent. Closing the series on April 17 are three luminaries from
the Quebec jazz world performing together in the Trio
DLP: Michel Donato, Pierre
Leduc and Richard Provençal. Three
enchanting concerts with LES
MÉLODÎNES at Place des
Arts.
Thursday, April 3, 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. at the
Studio-théâtre of Place des Arts
The lunch hour will be hot and spicy with the Latin-American
rhythms of the Ensemble Çavana. Formed in
2002, the group is made up of three Venezuelan-born musicians:
Ingrid Astudillo (piano and cuatro),
René Orea-Sanchez (flute and cuatro) and
Alejandro Rodriguez (bass, acoustic guitar and
cuatro), as well as Montrealer Evan Green
(acoustic and electric guitars and clarinet). Combining traditional
rhythms and sounds with more modern influences—including the
joropo, gaita, danza zuliana, waltz,
songs of work and especially the guasa and
merengue—the quartet conveys emotions ranging from
joy to nostalgia.
Thursday, April 10, 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. at the
Studio-théâtre of Place des Arts
A winner of several national and international awards, Canadian
Maneli Pirzadeh has established herself as one of
the most gifted pianists of her generation, as a soloist, chamber
musician and teacher. After obtaining an Artist Diploma from the
Glenn Gould Professional School in Toronto and a doctorate from the
University of Montreal, Maneli Pirzadeh has given
numerous concerts as a soloist with symphony orchestras and as a
recitalist in Toronto, Saskatoon, Banff and Montreal. She has also
appeared at several festivals throughout the country. To the great
joy of the lunch crowd, she will perform excerpts from Olivier
Messiaen’s Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant
Jésus.
Thursday, April 17, 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. at the
Piano Nobile of Place des Arts
To end the 2007-2008 season on a high note, Les
Mélodînes is presenting the Trio Jazz
DLP, comprising three pillars of Quebec jazz whose
reputations extend well beyond our borders. The D stands for
Michel Donato, eminent double bassist and winner
of the Oscar Peterson Award for lifetime achievement at the
1995 International Jazz Festival of Montreal. The L is for pianist
Pierre Leduc, a composer, arranger and accompanist
for such jazz and popular music greats as Léveillée,
Ferland and Ginette Reno. The P belongs to Richard
Provençal, a drummer with a forty-year career and
over 150 albums and innumerable film and television scores to his
credit. A lunch date not to be missed!
