February 29, 2008 - LES MÉLODÎNES AT PLACE DES ARTS - Celebrate spring to the sound of music!

Montreal, February 29, 2008 – Next in line in the fifth season of LES MÉLODÎNES presented by Pro Musica and Place des Arts are three delectable Thursday concerts, each from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. On March 13, guitarist Michael Ayles and violinist Jonathan Moorman will kick off the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in fine Irish fashion. The celebrated Disciples de Massenet choir under the direction of Lucie Roy will then display their glorious vocal skills on March 20. A week later, baritone Marc-Antoine d’Aragon, accompanied by pianist Francis Perron, will present a masterful lieder recital. Three Thursday lunch hours, three must-see concerts at Place des Arts.

Thursday, March 13, 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. at the Studio-théâtre of Place des Arts
Leading up to St. Patrick’s Day, guitarist Michael Ayles and fiddler Jonathan Moorman will recreate the warmth of an authentic Irish pub. Specializing in the traditional music of Ireland and Quebec, Michael Ayles is equally at home on guitar, tenor banjo and flute. He also plays with the Quebec group La Part du Quéteux. His cohort, violinist Jonathan Moorman, plays music ranging from Celtic jigs to gypsy tunes, French bourrées to Arabic, Klezmer and bluegrass. He has played with the African group Dakan, the folk dance troupe Reel & Macadam (of which he is the musical director) and the Jewish folk-rock group Stotland Yard.

Thursday, March 20, 12:10 to 12:50 – Holy Thursday Easter Concert at the Piano Nobile
The Disciples de Massenet choir, founded by Charles Goulet in 1928, includes about thirty amateur members. Since 2001, it has been directed by Lucie Roy, who is also the musical director of the vocal group Modulation, who appeared earlier this year at LES MÉLODÎNES. For eighty years, the choir has performed with some of the world’s greatest singers and conductors. It has also recorded over fifteen albums. As a celebration of Easter on Holy Thursday, the choir is performing the splendid Lux Aeterna by Morten Lauridsen, as well as Ave verum corpus de Imant Raminsh et Christus factus de Anton Bruckner who will be sung A cappella.

Thursday, March 27, 12:10 to 12:50 at the Studio-théâtre of Place des Arts
On this first Thursday of spring the focus is on opera, with a recital by Quebec baritone Marc-Antoine d’Aragon, accompanied by pianist Francis Perron. Already a recipient of numerous awards, Marc-Antoine d’Aragon has starred in numerous operatic productions. He recently performed the title role in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi with the McGill Symphony Orchestra. Francis Perron has pursued his career as a chamber musician and accompanist in both North America and Europe. On the program of LES MÉLODÎNES: Dichterliebe (Poet’s Love), op. 48, by Robert Schumann, an exquisite cycle of sixteen lieder set to poems by Heinrich Heine.
