Montréal, February 19, 2008
– Place des Arts is once again teaming up with the
International Festival of Films on Art (FIFA), the largest festival
of its kind in the world. A loyal partner in the presentation of
the event for seven years running, Place des Arts will host
screenings of a dozen films in the program, mainly related to the
performing arts, at its Cinquième Salle. Three special
events, a poster exhibition and an information kiosk will round out
the FIFA presence at Place des Arts this year.
The films* that will be featured in the Cinquième Salle
examine the lives and careers of a number of noted personalities in
various artistic disciplines: a look at 50 years in the remarkable
intellectual and political life of Simone de
Beauvoir; a portrait of Québec theatre giant
Gilles Pelletier; a profile of the career of
flamenco dancer Antonio Gades; the story of the
making of the epochal
Bob Marley album Exodus; a lesson in
moviemaking with Clint Eastwood; a close-up on the
life and work of actress Jeanne Moreau; a journey
through the creative world of choreographer Pina
Bausch; an exclusive encounter with pop singer
George Michael; and a study of the unique rise to
fame of Seu Jorge, the actor and singer who grew
up in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.
As mentioned, Place des Arts will also play host to three
special events during the Festival. Arts personalities will gather
to “tell stories” about Gilles Pelletier, as a
complement to the film Gilles Pelletier : le chemin
parcouru. To mark the 400th anniversary of Québec City
and the naming of Liverpool as the European Capital of Culture this
year, the Ensemble contemporain de Montréal will celebrate
the history and maritime nature of the two cities, as well as of
Montréal, in a performance highlighting three composers and
three filmmakers. Lastly, the film Flow will pay tribute
to the performers in the Cirque du Soleil show “O”.
Marie Lavigne, Chief Executive Officer of Place des Arts, views
the Festival as a rare opportunity to discover artists from
multiple horizons, noting that “The partnership between Place
des Arts and the FIFA offers the public the chance to get to know
the many forms of art, to discover the creative paths of major
artists, and to make connections between art and life through
film.”
