Montreal, October 16, 2007
– With LES
MÉLODÎNES, Pro Musica and Place des Arts
are offering you an invigorating musical break every Thursday at
lunchtime from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. Already in their fifth year,
these enjoyable encounters with renowned artists and musicians are
back by popular demand: a series of 18 weekly concerts will begin
on October 25. The concept is quite simple: bring your lunch,
settle in comfortably, and let yourself be lulled for forty minutes
by beautiful music.
Developed by Monique Dubé and Pierre Rolland, this series
of mouth-watering concerts will allow you to revisit some of the
great masters of the classic repertory, including Bach, Mozart,
Beethoven and Chopin, while leaving the door open to new
explorations and discoveries. Klezmer music, Irish flute, Bayan
accordion, choirs, operetta, folk, Venezuelan music or
jazz—the menu is diverse and will satisfy the most voracious
appetites. To serve these exquisite side dishes, Pro Musica has
recruited an array of exceptional musicians, members of renowned
orchestras and true virtuosos. Some of the names are immediately
recognizable, while others will be duly noted.
The first concert of the 2007-2008 season at the
Studio-théâtre of Place des Arts will offer
classical-music fans and the general public a foretaste of the
feasts to be served every Thursday. Young Quebec pianist David
Jalbert, one of the major talents of the new generation, will
dazzle audiences with his inspired interpretations of works by
Fauré, Chopin, Shostakovich and Dinuk Wijeratne. As recently
as last July, he was awarded the prestigious Virginia Parker Prize
by the Canada Council for the Arts. Jalbert holds degrees from the
Juilliard School in New York and the Glenn Gould Professional
School in Toronto. He received his Master’s Degree from the
Université de Montréal at age 21, along with the
Governor-General’s Gold Medal for the highest marks of all
graduate students. Jalbert has been a guest soloist with many
prominent orchestras, including the Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto
and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestras, the National Arts Centre
Orchestra, and the National Symphony of Ireland. Since 2004, he has
released two solo albums, the fruits of collaborations with his
long-time musical partner, cellist Denise Djokic. With his highly
personal style, incomparable stage presence and refined musical
ear, Jalbert has enthralled audiences and critics worldwide.
According to the Toronto Star, “Jalbert dazzles with
skill, style and taste [...] with all the exuberance and finesse a
listener could want.”
The musical celebration at the Studio-théâtre of
Place des Arts continues on Thursday, November 1 to the sounds of
Louise-Andrée Baril’s piano and
Ramsey Husser’s violin. This chamber music
recital features works by Handel, Mozart, Szymanowski and de Falla.
Pianist Louise-Andrée Baril is recognized as one of our
country’s foremost musicians. She has won several
competitions across Canada and the United States, and has given
numerous concerts on both sides of the Atlantic. The
French-speaking audience will quickly recognize her, as she
appeared for three years in the popular television program
FAITES VOS GAMMES, hosted by the well-known violinist
Angèle Dubeau. With over twenty recordings to his credit,
Louise-Andrée Baril has worked with the La
Pietá Chamber Orchestra and is a regular rehearsal
pianist for the Opéra de Montréal, the Montreal
Conservatory of Music and the Université de Montréal.
Originally from Vancouver, violinist Ramsey Husser
studied at the Peabody Conservatory of Music. Since 1992, he has
been a member of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, where he is
currently Assistant Concertmaster. Husser has given numerous
recitals and appeared in many chamber music festivals throughout
Canada and the United States. Besides his work as soloist with the
MSO, he has performed with other major institutions, including the
Vancouver and Baltimore Symphony Orchestras.
On November 8, the Do-Mi-Nante Quintet will
bring its energy and unique sound to Montreal audiences at
lunchtime. The musicians of this new orchestra are young, dynamic
and superbly talented. United by a common passion for music, these
five friends come from four different countries, Russia, Ukraine,
China and Armenia. They include Evgenia Kirjner
(piano), Xioahan Guo and Robert
Margaryan (violin), Elvira Misbakhova
(viola) and Katia Bragina (cello). The synergy
created by their different instruments will electrify audiences,
bringing sunshine into their workday. The aim of the
Do-Mi-Nante Quintet is to allow the public to
discover and appreciate the rich musical heritage of Russia. Their
performance of Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet in G
Minor, Opus 57, promises to be a real celebration. Add some caviar
to your lunchbox!
The concerts of this 5th season of Les
