Louise Lemieux
Bérubé, Canada’s distinguished pioneer
in the innovative use of Jacquard techniques in textile weaving was
born in Montreal, Quebec. Bérubé graduated from the
University of Quebec at Montreal with a degree in Art History. She
also studied Jacquard textile design at the Rhode Island School of
Design.
Bérubé has always been fascinated by the work of
artists, dancers, writers, photographers, film and multimedia
quilts etc. which she has incorporated into the imagery of her own
work. Bérubé explores a many faceted vision of life,
man and nature through the use of a computer-assisted technique
that she pioneered. This technique enables the artist to use a
photograph, manipulated to produce the desired effect, and
transformed into a woven textile.
Louise Lemieux Bérubé has exhibited her work
throughout Canada and the United States as well as in Belgium,
Finland, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Argentina, China and
Spain.
Lemieux Bérubé is the Founder of the Montreal
Centre for Contemporary Textiles, which she continues to direct,
and where she has taught students from around the world. She is
also the author of Le Tissage créateur (Creative Weaving), a
text book for weavers of all levels.
Lemieux Bérubé was the Chair of the Conseil des
metiers d’art du Quebec from 1990-2000. She is a member of
the Conseil des arts textiles du Quebec, and since 1995 has been a
member of the administrative and advisory committees of the
Socitété de développement des entreprises
culturelles du Québec.
